The Lone Skyscraper in Downtown Austin, Texas

September 26, 2010. Austin, Texas.

There’s something majestic about a lone tall building standing in the vastness of an empty sky. It’s almost like this skyscraper owns the space and nobody dares to intrude. I was lucky to have shot this during dusk because I think the subtle pink in the barely visible clouds adds a little depth to the photo. Without that, I think the picture might have turned out flatter. What do you think?

PHOTO TIPS:

  • Negative Space — One element in photography composition I often appreciate is the use of negative space when shooting. When done appropriately, it creates a feeling of grandeur because there’s nothing else in the shot to distract from the subject.
  • Rule of Thirds — Positioning the skyscraper to one side, specifically to one third of a side, versus the middle is another rule of photography composition I enjoy following. The negative space is greatly emphasized when positioned this way.

Have you incorporated these elements of photography composition in your shooting? What other rules do you enjoy using? Please feel free to leave a comment or question below or on my Facebook wall.
