Sailing to Our Passions — iPhone Photography of San Francisco Bay, California

Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. — Mark Twain

He ran as fast as he could to the hotel and up the flight of stairs to get to the top level. John was on the beach at a coastal resort in Thailand when the tsunami waves began to gush and roar onto shore. Luckily, he made it safely to the top. But many others — hundreds of thousands of others — weren’t so lucky when a massive earthquake triggered a series of tsunamis along the coasts of the Indian Ocean in December 2004.

It was a chilly afternoon, typical for Northern California’s bay area this time of the year. It had been raining on and off for the last couple of days, but on this Monday a few weeks ago, the sun shone brightly all day and not a gray cloud was in sight. It was the perfect day to take the boat out.

So on this cold Monday afternoon, my friend John invited me to go sailing with him. We were out on the water at noon, with the bright sun shining down straight from above. If the wind didn’t blow too much, the sun rays actually provided a bit of comforting warmth. As the evening approached, the sky turned dark blue behind the golden setting sun. And finally at dusk, the sky was a canvas of light orange and pink. It was amazing to see nature paint this way.

It was during that time out on the water that John shared his tsunami story with me. It’s a sad story with a lucky ending for those who made it out alive. It’s a story that reminds us that life is indeed unpredictable, fragile, fleeting, humbling. It’s a story that inspires me to set sail where my passions lie because life does have an ending. For some sooner than others, and it’s okay that we don’t know when it ends. What’s really important is living the moment with purpose and gratitude.

To John, I extend my deepest gratitude for sharing your stories and adventures with me. I hope you continue to sail to your passions in life.icon smile Sailing to Our Passions iPhone Photography of San Francisco Bay, California

Feeling under the weather, so I looked out of it. Four sweaters, a scarf, a hat and under a blanket -- but still cold! And there's John doing his thing because I was no help at all!

Looks gorgeous! You look quite chilly, though. John’s story is sad but it is great that he keeps up with sailing and enjoys the life he has.

Michelle – Nice photos! I should have lent you my -50 degree sleeping bag and or my full body down suit meant for Antarctica! I’m sooo looking forward to temps in the upper 70′s and 80′s this weekend in Pasadena :)

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2011

The beginning of a new year always seems to bring out a reflective mood in many of us. I take no exception to that, and so here I am writing my personal sentiments in this post. Even though I started this blog just a mere two months ago, it’s a project that’s been dwelling in my head and heart for many years. The hardest part is putting myself out there, vulnerable to judgment, perhaps some good and some bad. But ultimately, I have to remind myself that I’m doing this for me. I’m not a professional travel photographer. I’m not a professional travel writer. I’m just a person who wants to live life to the fullest and does what she loves. I love to travel. I love to write. I love to photograph.

I want to document my experiences so that I will remember just in case I forget. I want my future grandchildren to know me through this blog just in case I leave them too soon. I want to share and connect with others because life is meaningless when we’re living it alone. I want to look back on my life and have no regrets when my time comes. So in looking back this past year, I wanted to post these photos below to reflect what I love. Yes, ….. as silly as it looks.

These iPhone photos above were taken in Cancun, Mexico during my JetBlue AYCJ trip this past October. I woke up one morning to this stunning sunrise (left photo). Since I didn’t have a tripod with me, I improvised and used a table and chair on the beach to take some slow shutter speed photographs. The next morning came another beautiful sunrise (right photo). Fortunately, I found another table to replace the flimsy plastic chair from the previous day. But it was very windy, and the waves were coming in hard and reaching the legs of the table. Eventually, when it became too close for comfort, I had to pull my camera off the table because I was afraid the wind would knock it over into the ocean. And then I grabbed a quick shot in the photo below. During this time, there were a few spectators and morning beach joggers that were entertained by me doing what I love. Yes, ….. as silly as I looked.icon smile HAPPY NEW YEAR 2011

Thank you to all of you who have supported and encouraged me to do what I love. Happy New Year!

WINDOW SEAT PLEASE

It’s a must. I’ll take a window seat please. If I had to choose between an aisle in first class or a window in the back of the plane, I’ll take the window seat please. It’s a must.

You see, if I sat in the middle or the aisle, my seat neighbors may not appreciate my attempts to reach over to click click click out the window. Excuse me Lady, but your arm is right in front of my nose! — so I’ve been told a couple of times. Obviously, they don’t know that it’s a must.

It’s a must because when I look out the window, the blue sky and white clouds leave me feeling at peace. At peace because no matter our many differences, we all live under that same blue sky.  I feel a sense of closeness even when the landscape suggests effortless distance.  How do we become close if we don’t reach out to the distance?

As you can see in the iPhone photos below, I’ll take a window seat please. It’s a must.

Thank you for visiting and reading my first blog post. I created this site as a way for me to journal my memories while traveling and to connect and share with others whom might also be interested. This site is a work in progress. I’ll be continuing to add more photo galleries as we go along. Any suggestions you may have to improve this site is greatly appreciated. Hope to hear from you!

You have a wonderful knack for helping me see things in your photos that I wouldn’t even notice in real life. Many times I feel like I can reach out and touch what you’ve photographed, they are so crisp and clear. I LOVE to see your work…it’s very inspiring!
